Rye, Punt e Mes, and Luxardo maraschino: three ingredients that were all obscure when this drink was invented, and are all essential now.

Vincenzo Errico, Milk & Honey, New York, circa 2003.

Rye Whiskey, Punt e Mes, Luxardo Maraschino. ABV 32%

One 75ml serving of Red Hook contains 156 calories

The Red Hook sits between a Manhattan and a Brooklyn. The Punt e Mes, a bittersweet Italian vermouth with more quinine than standard, adds a bitter edge that a regular Manhattan does not have. The Luxardo maraschino rounds it off. Each ingredient does something the others cannot.

We age it for six weeks. The combination of rye’s spice, the Punt e Mes’s bitterness, and the deep cherry of the maraschino is one of the most complete flavour structures in the canon.

Vincenzo Errico created this at Milk & Honey in the early 2000s, during the first wave of the modern rye whiskey revival. He has since returned to Italy. The Red Hook is almost certainly the most famous cocktail created by an Italian since the Negroni.

Serve straight up in a chilled Nick and Nora or coupe glass. Garnish with a Luxardo cherry.
